Knitting to commemorate the First World War

The Film

This knitting project is a contribution to the making of a film to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War in 2014. WAG wanted to tell the story of an unknown soldier and chose a war memorial at random. We found a remarkable archive related to one soldier, Robert Crowder and a beautiful stained glass window dedicated to his memory. Tell them of Us is a story both unique and universal; it is the story of two brothers…

We have recorded Grace Crowder (Victoria Rigby) reading one of Robert’s letters from the front line in 1917

Grace’s clothes, designed and made especially for this scene, are based on 1917 fashion and Grace’s taste as indicated by the many photographs of her.
